Various methods of approach to portraiture will be taught, from Alla Prima (finishing a portrait in one sitting) to more classical approaches taken over two to three sittings. Methods of approach vary from the classical renaissance, to American Impressionism. Stylization of the sitter is also welcome, however the aim is to capture the essence of the sitter's character.
The head study is particularly useful to fine-tune your drawing ability to achieve a likeness, as well as studying more subtle colour mixtures to achieve value or temperature changes in skin. Learn how value and temperature changes make the anes of the face turn, how to achieve depth, and most importantly, study of edges and how they advance and recede in space.
The study of colour pigments and colour theory will inform your approach to colour mixing, which once memorized, will allow anyone to understand how a particular colour pigment behaves when mixed. Colour charts are useful, but it is the memorized understanding of how the particular colour behaves that makes the mixing of the correct colour second nature. This knowledge will allow you to purchase and use any brand with confidence.
Beginners will learn by starting with tonal paintings using a very limited palette. Students will also learn by watching and observe demonstrations. Great for visual learners. More advanced students will be assisted on an individual basis. Students will be encouraged to work individually to find the best method to suit their personality and needs.
