Painting flowers and the Still Life is one of my favourite genres. The applied patience of preparation of the painting surface, the challenge of preparing a good composition, doing a fine drawing, with careful attention to the tonal underpainting and subsequent glazing serve to all but guarantee a fine painting. If any of these stages are rushed, the painting will suffer. Preparation is the key. My study of traditional painting is informed by various methods of approach, from the Dutch masters to other renowned artists such as Clinton T. Hobart, and Lyn Difenbach.
Classes will begin by focusing on surface preparation, composition, accurate drawing techniques, palette organisation and layout, colour pigment and colour mixing and understanding tonal variations. Students will require two palettes, one of opaque colours and one of transparent colours. To achieve lumunosity and rich, strong colour, it is recommended that Series 1 colours (hues and spectrum colours) in the primary colours are avoided.
All students will be following a step by step procedure, beginning our flower painting from life, and finishing from photographs, drawings and colour notes.
Expected outcome over the 9 weeks is 1-2 finished paintings.
Note: If you wish to pay a levy of $60 to the school for the use of the more expensive colours, please request when booking.
