Brisbane Art Workshops Newsletter May 2008

Welcome
By now, some of you would be aware of a change in ownership of Brisbane Art Workshops which commences 1st July 2008. I will still be involved, however am entering into a partnership, and a news release will be sent sometime soon announcing more details.  We are working towards a bigger and better  business model that will see painting come of age in Brisbane.  There has been much work put into pricing these Workshops correctly, and you will find that we will now be rewarding those students who pay early by offering Earlybird prices, which are valid 30 or more days prior to a workshop or class commencing, and a price per day, if you only want to come along for one day.  These prices are at a premium, as a place is being taken away from someone else who could otherwise do the whole workshop.  In order to keep these classes as reasonable as possible, we are now passing on the fees to people who choose to pay by Credit Card (pay by phone - merchant facilities pending) or by Paypal.  The new Payment and Refund Policy is attached below for your perusal, and this is currently in the process of being uploaded to the website.  Direct Deposit is still the preferred method of payment.

Change of Name
The name Brisbane Art Workshops will soon be under the umbrella of another name, and this changeover will take effect from the 1st July 2008.  More information will be sent soon via a news release.

Workshops commencing now to end June 2008
These workshops have been re-priced to give you the best possible value.  Please note the following workshops include morning tea only, as you will need to bring your own lunch (there are shops nearby) and that any fees paid after todays date will come under the effect of the new Refund and Credit Policy.  Please note that if you have already paid the full amount, you will receive art materials or a book to the value of the difference.   Prices on the website payable by Paypal may not show these new prices.  These prices will be updated as soon as possible.

Brisbane Art Workshops Newsletter Update for April 2008

Welcome to the newsletter update for April. I hope you all had a great Easter! My apologies for being so late sending this to you.

Michael Mark – “Secrets of the Old Masters” Workshop

A BIG Thank You goes to Michael Mark who travelled up to Brisbane for the Secrets of the Old Masters course.   I personally thought this workshop was magnificent. I do my best work if I stop and plan more carefully, with the majority of the time spent on the grisalle (the underpainting). Since I am constantly making adjustments in my paintings, staying with the underpainting until you are satisfied makes the final stages fast as you work with glazes, wiping back, and playing up the lights. The underpainting should be lighter in tone, as the glazes will quickly darken the shadow areas. This allows the painting to be finished fast because the ground work doesn’t need changing, only enhancing.  Here’s a photo of my “Still Life Painting with Drapery & Christmas Bauble”. Infact Melanie Bardolia said that this was “one of the best workshops I have attended”. You’ll be able to read the other great reviews as soon as they are posted onto the website. In the meantime, here’s my underpainting and finished painting, as well as Rhyl Hinwood’s drapery study.

For those of you who missed “Secrets of the Old Masters”, Michael will be back in the first half of 2009 to conduct a repeat of this great workshop, which will be followed up by “Secrets of the Old Masters: Creating a Narrative PtII”.

Preparing your own colour chart for skin tones, developed from your own personal choice of artists oil colours (or acrylic colours) definitely helps when you are trying to judge skin tones. There are a myriad of tones, temperatures and colour mixtures available to the artist, and once you take the time to complete this colour chart, you can hold this up to the model if you’re not sure what colour you’re seeing. This may seem like a tedious exercise, but this is well worth the time spent as you will become better acquainted with the colours you have and your chosen manufacturer’s brand, and how each colour reacts when mixed with other colours. Being able to judge the correct colour is important if you are seeking to become skilled in the Alla Prima method, which means being able to finish a painting in one sitting. To do this successfully, it’s important to mix the right colour, and place this in the correct area, with the correct stroke –i.e., no mistakes. This requires good drawing skills, good tools, and excellent judgement. Alla Prima is the method of the master painter.

If you want to find out more about Alla Prima, an excellent reference book by Richard Schmid (one of Clayton J. Beck’s teachers) is called “Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting”. You can find out more about this book and about Richard Schmid by visiting his website http://www.RichardSchmid.com

If you’re interested in obtaining a copy of this book, please email krisstie@brisbaneartworkshops.com.au  and I may be able to put in a bulk order to save on postage.

This is where it’s important to have the best brand of paint you can afford. That however, is easier said than done. There is sometimes a subtle and sometimes a major difference between pigment and paint consistency and handling that I am only now beginning to truly understand. I have been reading and taking a voracious amount of notes from Virgil Elliott’s “Traditional Oil Painting: Advanced Techniques and Concepts from the Renaissance to the Present” (available from our store), and if you want to find out more about oil paint, see the Special Offer below for Michael Mark’s five day Workshop “Secrets of the Old Masters”.

Clayton J. Beck has a colour mixing exercise on his website at this link http://www.claytonjbeckiii.com/Instructional2.html

This exercise is based on sight to judge the tones, and the percentages mean intensity rather than a mathematical percentage. Each row (ie, the bottom row) should all be the exact same tone (lightness or darkness), allowing you to see the subtle changes in temperature in different mixtures.

Also when painting portraits, you can’t go past a good filbert brush. Terry’s preferred brand of brush is the Daler-Rowney filbert bristle brush which has a softer bristle than most other brands, and her recommended brand of paint for portraits is Winsor & Newton, with Terra Rosa, one of her most favoured colours.

The best palette to use is a large piece of glass (best for the studio) or clear Perspex (best if you’re travelling). If you’re painting onto a coloured ground (toned canvas), then tone a piece of paper the same colour and place this under the palette, as this will help you judge how your colours will look against the toned canvas.

This will be a FIVE day workshop with Michael Mark who will be flying up to Brisbane from Melbourne. Michael recently completed his PhD at the Victorian College of the Arts, and has been teaching for 15 years in America, Europe and Australia. Students will be working from a still life set up with drapery, or from your own underpaintings prepared prior to class. Michael says:

“… this workshop examines Western painting traditions of the Dutch and Flemish schools. We construct painting surfaces, both on linen and board, including preparing surfaces for silverpoint drawings in order to flesh out some of the practices of the past. Close observation of objects under directed light will serve as subject matter, as will reproductions. A working methodology significantly different to processes often employed today (neither better, nor worse), allows participants to gain an understanding into traditions shared by such diverse painters as Vermeer, Caravaggio and Titian.

We will be grinding pigments and making oil paint, preparing paint for egg tempera on our gessoed panel, and learning how to varnish paintings. This intensive five-day workshop will include procedures for underpainting and glazing, the building blocks for painters who are attempting to explore issues of transparency and opacity. The techniques in this subject are, of course, applicable and malleable to any subject matter today’s artist may choose”.

Secure your place/s EARLY by phoning Krisstie on 0402 342 421, or email krisstie@brisbaneartworkshops.com.au. Deposits or full payments must be made as soon as possible once your tentative booking has been received, and all deposits or payments must be received by close of business Friday 14th March 2008. Late payments may be accepted.  If you need to contact Michael about the Materials List you can contact him directly on m.mark@pgrad.unimelb.edu.au .

Weekend Workshop No.1 with Anna Niblic Heggie

The first Weekend Workshop for 2008 is fast approaching and is on next weekend on the 12th and 13th of January. We still have a few spaces left, so if you’re intending to come to Anna’s Workshop I need confirmation of numbers by 10.30am Thursday 10th of January for catering purposes. If you’d like to hear Anna talk about her upcoming Workshop, you can see her YouTube video on the Brisbane Art Workshops website www.brisbaneartworkshops.com.au or you can follow this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEM9qdGD8yU

Weekend Workshop No.2 with Des Rolph

This Weekend Workshop runs over two weekends, the first weekend commences on the 26th and 27th January, with a break of a week to think about how you will approach the following weekend of the 9th and 10th February. This workshop focuses on ‘Discovering your Signature Style’, which is an essential element to finding success in the Art World. Des has extensive knowledge on getting into a gallery (she used to own one), and what galleries look for when they decide who they will represent. Having also dealt with buyers of art, Des has more insider knowledge about the types of people who buy art work, and what they look for. Remember, knowledge is power, and if you want to advance in any field, the more you invest in your number one asset, YOU, the more productive you will become. Places are filling up for this Workshop, so if you intend to register, I will need confirmation of numbers by Thursday 10.30am Thursday 24th January, 2008 for catering purposes. For more information on these two workshops go to http://www.brisbaneartworkshops.com.au/day_courses.html

Register for an Art Space Weekend

What’s an Art Space Weekend? Basically, an Art Space Weekends will be held in lieu of any Workshop that has to be cancelled for any reason. When a Workshop is cancelled, we will still open the space for painters who want somewhere to paint for the weekend. If you’re like me, and you have a really small house, or maybe you’ve got a house full of kids so you can’t paint in peace, coming to a dedicated space where you can move around freely and have the room to stand back from your painting is luxury.

While I will be in attendance at these Art Space Weekends, and while I am happy to offer my assistance, these Weekends are unstructured and are un-tutored, as I will be working on my own paintings, and I would encourage those who attend to help each other too. Weekends like these are a great chance to mix with like-minded people, to use the time to talk to other artists, to watch how other people approach their paintings, and most importantly, to become inspired.

If you’re interested in registering for any weekend that may become available, please email Krisstie@brisbaneartworkshops.com.au or phone me on 0402342421, and let me know as soon as possible. If a Space becomes available, I will contact you by email or phone sometime in the final two days before the workshop begins.

The Art Space Weekend is $30.00 (cash payments only), and there will be tea and coffee provided. Please bring your lunch, all your own art materials and your own reference material. The venue will open at approximately 9.15am, and will close somewhere between 4.30pm to 5.30pm. I have 20 easels and tables for use, however, I may be able to fit more artists in, so if you have your own portable easel, and table please let me know.

Any spills or mess must be cleaned up immediately (respect the venue).

My apologies for seeming so strict, but I was at a Workshop myself a while ago, and one of the students had put their acrylic medium into a water bottle, because the original acrylic medium container had a split in it, and she hadn’t gotten around to labeling the bottle. She had a bad habit that she’d developed when she painted at home, of having her water bottle sit on her painting table. Well, you know what happened next … she wasn’t looking … she just reached over for her water bottle in the area that she normally leaves it on the table, and proceeded to take a mouthful. As soon as she realized she had medium in her mouth she spat it out, and fortunately didn’t swallow any. However, it took her several hours to get the taste out of her mouth, and it left her mouth and tongue with a chemical burn. She was very lucky. So please be careful. Oh yeah, one of my other rules, is NO food or drink on the same table as your paints (splashes and accidents happen).

Parting Thought: Zen and the Art of Painting

Applying the philosophy of Zen to the art of painting; it’s not the end result that we should be attached to, but the journey, particularly when doing Abstracts. Drawing from my experience in the martial arts, I understand the state of “No Mind”, is very similar to that state of mind one obtains when one paints, like a state of meditation. To draw a parallel, you could read the classic book, “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”. To help explain my thinking about “No Mind” I draw quotes from C.A. & A. Simpkins (1999) book, ‘Simple Zen: A Guide to Living Moment by Moment’:

Some of the arts that are considered as Zen arts may seem diametrically opposite, such as martial arts and painting. Despite the outward appearance of difference, at the level of mind, much is the same: the sword and the brush are One … Once the brush is “charged” with paint, there is only one correct stroke. Ink on rice paper will not erase, just as an incorrect cut with the sword cannot be removed … In fact, Zen arts are a form of meditation, both for the artist and for the audience …. Zen painters free themselves from rules and techniques in order to express their inner spirit, ... and paint with sincerity and simplicity… Zen arts also differ from other forms of art in that they are goalless. This would seem to be a contradiction, since doing art produces a product, something that comes out of the effort, like a painting …but for a master of Zen arts, if you try to make a painting … (or create the perfect sword action) you will inevitably fail. Instead, Zen artists approach their subject …without self, and without ego, … and without a preconceived thought or plan of what it should be … Mind must remain empty, allowing attention to flow naturally wherever it needs to go. Then many things are possible, and whatever you have trained yourself to do will be performed automatically, like a flash of lightning.

The ultimate focus is no-focus, beyond distinguishing between self and other. The sword becomes an extension of the swordfighter, and correct technique happens instinctively, in a natural response to the situation. This is made possible by responding to each moment of challenge as it comes, without thought. The ultimate strategy is no-strategy … and the ultimate in sword-fighting techniques is the way of no-technique. (pp.85-128)

Brisbane Art Workshops Update 2

A little over a week to go till Christmas, and only two weeks left of 2007. I hope you all stay safe and have a great time enjoying the festivities over the coming weeks. Here’s an update of what’s been happening:

Revamped Front Page of our websitehttp://www.brisbaneartworkshops.com.au

We’ve added a satisfaction guarantee (conditions apply) that will ensure you get what you pay for – and that’s to improve your painting skills. As far as we know, this is unheard of in the art world. Many years ago, I attended a painting class that didn’t help me improve at all. I knew I needed help and improvement because just months before I was rejected from my art school of choice, but the tutor just kept saying “Oh, that’s wonderful”. I personally vowed that if I ever started my own art school, that I would search high and low to get the best artists/tutors I could. We’ve done just that, and if you’re not satisfied, then neither are we.

You Tube Video of Anna Niblic Heggie

We’ve also included a video of Anna Niblic Heggie, where you can watch her talk about her work and her upcoming Weekend Workshop on the 12th and 13th of January 2008. I just love her paintings, and am looking forward to her Workshop which is only four weeks away. You can see Anna’s video by clicking the video on the left or by following this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEM9qdGD8yU.

All our workshops are receiving a steady stream of bookings, so if you want to secure your place at her workshop, send in your deposit as soon as you can. We have limited this class to 12 students only.

Student Gallery

The Student Gallery is now up and running, and there is a link on the Home page to the Gallery. You can also find this under the ‘About Us’ button under Testimonials, as well as in the Student Gallery listed under ‘Our Artists’ button.

Artist Palette Magazine

Recently Maryika Welter, who is teaching the Weekend Workshop in April, was featured in the Artist Palette Magazine No.55, December 2007, where she talks about how her life experiences have changed her perceptions, and the demonstration featured is very similar to the image showcased on our brochure. Watch out for Brisbane Art Workshops in the January edition of Artist Palette magazine.

Our Artists News

You may have noticed that Des Rolph’s link has disappeared from her page within our website. Des has decided to devote more time to her painting, and has left RM Galleries, who are in the process of moving from their current premises at Hamilton. RM Galleries is now run by Pete Martin. Des tells me she has some exciting exhibitions planned for 2008, and we’ll let you know more as news comes to hand. Watch out for more news about our artists’ upcoming exhibitions and events.

eBay Web-Store

Our eBay web-store is now up and running. We’re currently selling a range of some of the best books around. Having been to the Queensland College of Art, and having taught adults how to paint for the past 14 years …I know a good book when I see it. We all know good reference books are worth their weight in gold. Most of these books have been published by Watson-Guptill, one of the most famous art publishing houses in the world. Some books will literally change your life.

To read more about these books visit our eBay web-store by going to http://stores.ebay.com.au/brisbane-art-workshops

We also stock Business Books

A lot of you out there are professionals within the industry. We feel it’s wise as Art Providers to give you books that will help you in your businesses. I’m a teacher, and I’m passionate about knowledge, business and art.

Change the way

Another excellent book I have in my store http://stores.ebay.com.au/brisbane-art-workshops is a book called “Change the Way You See Everything through Asset-Based Thinking” by Wasiak & Cramer.

Weird title, but interesting subject. When you change the way you see things, the things you see will change.

Speaking of Books – Have you heard about the Kimble …?

Amazon has just launched the Kimble which is a little battery powered book, that has no backlight like a computer screen, so it doesn’t strain your eyes, and its also clearly visible in bright sunlight, just like a real book. Apparently you can subscribe to newspapers and store about 200 ebooks on its hard drive. If you want to find out more about a device that will help save lots of trees, and help avoid climate change, then go to http://www.amazon.com?%5Fencoding=UTF8&tag=brisartwork-20

Art Supplies Anyone?

Over the years, many students who are starting to paint the first time have asked me what type of materials they should use, Acrylics or Oil paint. From my experience, there is one basic rule with art supplies, and that is you do really get what you pay for. The more expensive the pigment, the brush, the canvas, the more colourful, the more long-lasting the canvas, the better the brushes, the better handling of the paint application, the better experience you will have. Students can often get frustrated when the paint they buy doesn’t do what they want it to. Mixing colours is daunting enough, never mind that your Scarlett Red looks more Brown than Red. Lesson: Always buy the very best you can afford.

My perspective on Oil Paint

The second thing to take into account is the advantages and disadvantages of oils vs acrylics. From my perspective, I like the look and feel of oils – they are luxurious and retain their sheen, and stay workable for long periods, however they are sticky and if you wear disposable gloves like me, they are sometimes unbearable to wear in very hot weather. If I’m very very careful, I have tried to paint bare handed before. The only problem was that one day, I thought I had nothing on my hands, and I went and turned the stereo down. Well whatever was on my hands proceeded to eat into the stereo plastic knob for several months. Now imagine what they can do to your skin. That said, if you are a careful and patient sort of person of person, oil paints would suit you. However, anyone else can use oil, as long as you can resist the urge to scratch your head for an hour or so, you could use this as well. I would definitely consider wearing disposable gloves at all times though.

My perspective on Acrylic Paint

However, if you’re a very hands on, impulsive, quick, impatient type of person, then acrylics would suit your personality. The new Atelier Interactive Acrylics are the ones that I prefer because of the flexibility with the speed of drying. It allows me to use impasto, line work, glazes etc in a short space of time, so the application of paint is extremely satisfying and you can get results quite fast, so this allows for more experimentation with the application of the paint itself. The downside is that on very hot humid days the drying time is very fast, even with the Slow Medium and Retarder, and if you care about the environment, there are some pretty strict guidelines I believe any person who paints with Acrylics should follow as far as cleaning up palettes and brushes. Like working with disposable palettes (save your meat trays), and instead of washing the paint down the sink, use lots and lots of rags to clean brushes in-between water clean ups. Dipping your brush in the water and wiping with a rag a number of times before you scrub your brush down the bottom of the container, will keep your water clearer for longer, so you won’t have to keep getting up and changing it. Cast your water onto the lawn rather than tipping it down the sink if you can.

Brisbane Art Workshops cares about the environment and recommends Australian made products, like Atelier Interactive Acrylics and Art Spectrum oil paint.

Watch our ebay web-store for upcoming art supplies for sale. In the meantime, if you’d like to enquire about placing an order, please email krisstie@brisbaneartworkshops.com.au.

The other question most asked?

Over the years I’ve noticed that people often book into evening classes with the best of intentions, but often life gets in the way. To get what you pay for, and that is to improve your art practice, then you’ve got to make the commitment to yourself to turn up to every lesson. Choosing whether to do a Weekend Workshop or an evening class really comes down to your work and family commitments, and your lifestyle. If you know you’ll be really tired at night after working all day, then you’d be better off coming to a Weekend Workshop. True, they’re intense, but they’re over and done with in two days. Working for two days solid will fire your creativity and you’ll get a lot done. There’s nothing like achieving some results to fire you up to want to keep painting. Paint it once, admire it forever.
