Evening Workshops 2007

Date: Thursday evenings 25 October and 1; 8; 15; 22 & 29 November, 2007

Synopsis: Using reference material, students will be guided to choose to paint a portrait, landscape or still life, or other subject of choice. Students will be introduced to the foundation principles of composition & chiaroscuro techniques that create the illusion of depth, as well as receive help learning how to draw. Beginners will also receive a strong grounding in colour theory and will learn how to assess and mix colours accurately. Students will view demonstrations of techniques used to construct the image, by concentrating on building tonal forms and the use of colour to evoke emotion. John is a self-taught artist who describes his style as photo-realism. Krisstie has been teaching painting for 14 years and is the founder of Brisbane Art Workshops.

Kelly PurvisEvening Workshops No.1

Date: Monday evenings 4; 11; 18 & 25 February and 3 & 10 March
Title: Still Life: Exploring Chairoscuro
Teacher(s): Kelly Purvis & Krisstie Byrnne
Synopsis: Using a still life, students will learn the foundation principles of composition & chiaroscuro techniques, and will complete a major work on canvas that shows the power of light to create mood. Kelly Purvis graduated from the National Art School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree after winning the National Drawing Week Prize, & then travelled throughout Italy on an Art Tour with Dr Michael Hill. Krisstie has been teaching painting for 14 years and is the founder of Brisbane Art Workshops.

Date: Thursday evenings 7; 14; 21 & 28 February and 6 & 13 March
Title: Creating a Narrative in a Surrealist Landscape
Teacher(s): John H. Lynch & Krisstie Byrnne
Synopsis: Using gathered reference material, students will be guided to choose a topic or theme & then build their narrative using symbolic images, completing studies & compositional layouts as a basis for a major artwork in oils or acrylics. Students will view demonstrations of techniques used to construct the image, concentrating on building tonal forms and the use of colour to evoke emotion. John is a self-taught artist who describes his style as photo-realism. Krisstie has been teaching for 14 years and is the founder of Brisbane Art Workshops.

Title: ‘Still Life as a Colour Narrative’
Teacher(s):Maureen Hansen
Synopsis: After the style of Margaret Olley, students will explore a series of paintings of objects that make up still life narratives while using colour mixing strategies. Maureen has an energetic approach with an uninhibited sense of colour & although her brushwork is rather heavy, her work retains a unique sensitivity. Maureen is an award winning Brisbane artist who in 2001 won the Courier Mail Art Prize in two sections.

Jacqueline WinwoodEvening Workshops No.4

Date: Thursday evenings 10; 17 & 24 April and 1; 8 & 15 May
Title: ‘Explore the Style of Matisse & Klimt’
Teacher(s):Jacqueline Winwood & Krisstie Byrnne
Synopsis: This workshop is ideal for students who like the simple yet lyrical paintings by Matisse & Klimt. Students will be guided when composing their designs & translating the idea to canvas, focusing on colour strategies and pattern as well as the use of line to add mood. Jacqueline is a self-taught professional artist whose work is eclectic & colourful. Krisstie has been teaching art for 14 years & is the founder of Brisbane Art Workshops.

Title: Secrets to Good Portraiture

Date: Thursday evenings 19 & 26 June and 3; 10; 17 & 24 July
Title: Life’s a Beach: Water as Subject
Teacher(s):Mitchell Warner & Krisstie Byrnne
Synopsis: This workshop is ideal for students who love painting the beach & water. What seems so simple a subject can be difficult to depict, with such large parts of the painting seemingly one colour. Students will learn about reflected colour & learn to see colour within colour, glazing & depth. Mitchell has a BA in Fine Art from the Qld College of Art & has been a professional artist since 1993. Krisstie has been teaching for 14 years & is the founder of Brisbane Art Workshops

ANNA NIBLIE HEGGIEANNA NIBLIC HEGGIE: Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting – A Dynamic Approach

An intensive course that increases technical knowledge and develops thought processes. A systematic investigation of the subject matter is made using art references, drawing on the traditional teaching methodologies of the fine arts, incorporating a strong grounding in both drawing and painting using a dynamic approach. Visual awareness is increased with the freedom to express more creatively, working from a solid foundation of tonal analysis and colour mixing with technical demonstrations in glazing, scumbling and other paint applications. Anna has won the first prize of the Southern Cross Arts Festival, Ballina several times, exhibits internationally, working from her studio in Lennox Head.

 

 


ALAN MORRISONNOW COMMENCES 24 JULY 2008 (16 weeks)

ALAN MORRISON and KRISSTIE BYRNNE: Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting – Level 1

This 16 week course is focused on the traditional foundation of fine art; technique, which is the keystone of the traditional method of painting. Drawing is fundamental to all aspects of Art and Design practice, & is the primary tool for analysis, understanding, and the communication of visual ideas. The Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting is an introduction to good practice in representational drawing and painting, with special emphasis on the use of light, tonal values and the subtleties of colour mixing. This course of study is recommended for beginners, or for those students wishing to build a solid foundation of skill in the use of traditional techniques. Alan recently emigrated from Scotland where he studied fine arts, winning the coveted Newbury Medal, & his portrait painting has been shown in the National Portrait Gallery, London

MAUREEN HANSEN: Colour and Still Life

Dates: 1; 8; 15; 29 August and 5; 12 September 2008.

Immerse yourself in the art of seeing colour.. and using it to enhance your painting. Popular Australian contemporary colourists such as Margaret Olley, William Robinson and Davida Allen will inform Maureens lectures, and she can effectively demonstrate new ways to draw out the form of the objects and create light and dark through using the spectrum of colour. Matisse, Bonnard, Cezanne and the German Expressionists such as Kirshner or Nolde have informed generations of artists who seek to enrich their experience of colour: Maureen can unlock the secrets to why these artists are deemed the MODERN MASTERS and share their insights to successful composition and quality painting through the medium of Still Life. Maureen recently won the prestigious 2008 Tattersalls Art Prize.

CERNAK: A Metaphysical Modernist Approach

Working from a combination of figure and landscape, the central concept of identifying oneself with where you are in time and place, will help to connect your art practice to your life. Using various genres such as Still Life, Figure work, Metroscape and Fantasy will help expand your creative development and evolution as an artist, as you cover aspects such as contour in context of space, deconstruction, identifying colour and its emotional relationship, allegory, symbolism, myths and archetypes. Cernak is a Metaphysical Modernist with experience in East European as well as East Coast Australian art developments.

 


Evening Workshops No.7

1Date: Thursday 7 August 2008 (6 weeks)
Title: Capturing the Atmosphere of the Landscape
Teacher(s): John Bell & Krisstie Byrnne
Synopsis: This workshop will focus on painting the landscape with particular emphasis on the sky at dusk, working from reference photos in either oils or acrylics. Demonstrations using oil paint and interactive acrylics, these classes are suitable for the beginner to intermediate student.

 

 


Evening Workshops No.8

1Date: Monday 29 September 2008 (6 weeks)
Title: Retaining Spontaneity
Teacher(s): Alan Morrison
Synopsis: Alan recently emigrated from Scotland where he studied fine arts, winning the coveted Newbury Medal, & his portrait painting has been shown in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Working from a model, learn to retain that rawness & fresh feel of the original idea by exploring composition, the spontaneity of brushmarks, with an emphasis on the underpainting.

Title: Imagination in Illustration
Teacher(s): Dr. Cameron Stelzer
Synopsis: Cameron is a highly qualified and experienced artist, illustrator, author and publisher, founding the independent publisher Daydream Press. Throughout the classes he will share advice on the entire process of creating a book to having it published. Discover the exciting world of picture book illustration and learn how to create unique characters and backgrounds using watercolours as well as how to link the pictures together to form a narrative.
